Bollywood Movies/Series That Inspired Real-Life Crimes
Bollywood's influence on Indian society is unquestionable, celebrated for its capacity to entertain, inspire, and occasionally exert unexpected influence on individuals. Yet, alongside its positive impact, there have been instances where real-life crimes were instigated by individuals drawing inspiration from Bollywood films and series. These occurrences serve as stark reminders that media wields the power not only to mold our perceptions but also to shape our actions.
Bollywood Films and Series That Sparked Real-Life Criminal Acts
Taking a closer look, there is a collection of films and series that have inadvertently motivated people to engage in unlawful activities.
Hindi Medium
The movie's powerful narrative inspired a businessman in Delhi to manipulate his financial status to secure a spot for his son at Chanakyapuri's Sanskriti School.
Special 26
In Mumbai, eight men, posing as Income Tax officials with fake credentials, stole Rs 1.5 crore from a garment dealer's home. What's even more unsettling is that the film Special 26 drew inspiration from such real-life events, and this incident is one of fifteen reported cases influenced by the movie.
Farzi
Shahid Kapoor's celebrated digital debut in Farzi unexpectedly inspired a scam. In Mumbai, a group of men earned a significant sum by selling counterfeit garba passes. One of the main culprits, upon arrest, confessed to drawing inspiration from Shahid Kapoor's series to create fake event passes for quick profits.
Shootout At Lokhandwala
Motivated by Vivek Oberoi's character in the film, a boy from Meerut kidnapped and later brutally murdered his classmate when the victim's father refused to pay a ransom. In the police inquiry, the accused confessed that he derived his inspiration from this Bollywood movie.
Drishyam
The Ghaziabad police solved a four-year-old case following a young woman's testimony about her mother's murder of her father. The victim's body was concealed in a cement pit beneath their house, resembling a scene from the Bollywood movie Drishyam.
Pushpa: The Rise
In a troubling development, Delhi teenagers, seemingly influenced by the film Pushpa, committed a heinous crime, taking the life of an innocent person in their misguided quest for criminal notoriety. In a separate case, a sandalwood smuggler tried to outsmart the police during illegal sandalwood activities.
Khosla Ka Ghosla
The Crime Branch dismantled a gang selling Delhi Development Authority plots in New Delhi. During their interrogation, the gang admitted that they drew inspiration from the movie Khosla Ka Ghosla for their illicit activities.
Dhoom
In the 2006 blockbuster Dhoom, John Abraham's character robs a casino in Goa. Tragically, this inspired a group of four bikers to attempt a bank heist in Kerala. They later confessed that the movie had directly influenced their decision when they were apprehended by the police.
Bunty Aur Babli
Inspired by Bunty Aur Babli, a couple in West Bengal posed as beauticians to gain access to homes, where they had victims wear masks for an hour. Meanwhile, they executed theft and property crimes, highlighting the worrisome impact of film-inspired criminal behaviour. In the movie, Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan pull off similar schemes.
